Since 1977, our genetic center, named SEMTEST CRAIOVA has been producing frozen bovine semen of indigenous breeds as well as of tested bulls coming from european countries such as Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Hungary and Check Republic. Our main goal is producing semen according to the breeding programs of each our native breed in order to assure genetic progress.
Taking into account the large diversity of raised breeds in Romania, our genetic center has produced frozen semen of dairy breeds, both dairy and beef and beef breeds. Semtest Craiova AI Center brought a beef bull for collecting semen in Romania in 2003 for the first time. The charolaise bull, called Jimm, was used for crossbreeding with native cows and had great results, many farmers obtaining crossbreeding calves with good slaughtering features. Also, we brought the first blue belgian bull, Iwan, in Romania in 2006. His semen was spread in small farms. His results were over expectations, his calves having great shapes and high yield in carcass, being very apreciated in meat consuming countries. The crossbreeding in Romania has begun with this bull which became as famous as a legend.
On the other hand, cosidering yhat the lows of breeding involve the breeding act must be developed in herds and bulls have to be tested in farms than the breeding values means the sum of genotyp and environment.
Semtest Craiova Genetic Center is the only one who understood the importance of test breeding and figured up that by the fact of bringing into romanian herds only foreign tested bulls, we will lose the identity of our native races. The same lows of breeding improvement encourage the gene import no higher than 20 percent. Under these circumstances and with support of our national romanian breeding associations, AGCTR for holstein, ACVBR-SIM for simmental and BRUNA SCHWYZ MARAMUȘ for brown swiss, the breeding testing process has begun for the first romanian young bulls. They have been collected and their semen was spread into romanian farms in order to trace their progeny for prooving their performances. The progeny test is absolutely essential for accuracy of breeding values of bulls and also necessary for our national data base. This way the coming generations could be compared and only by continuing this we will be able to establish the romanian national genetic baseline.
Services
Our company manufactures and sells semen in order to improve the cattle breeds in Romania. The bulls which we collect are tested in the countries they come from: Italy, Germany, Hungary, Belgium, etc. and are periodically evaluated according to the country of their origin genetic evaluation criteria (BLUP) and meet the requirements of the breeding programs specific to each Romanian herd book. Using semen of genomic and tested bulls makes genetic progress in the cow population grow from one generation to the next, getting better yields of milk and meat.
We produce semen of the most famous breeds of milk (Baltata cu negru româneasca, Holstein), dual purpose (Balata Româneasca, Simmental, Brown swiss) and beef ( Blue Belgian, Angus, Charolaise, Limousin), we provide frozen semen from special breeds, also (Pinzgauer, Montbeliarde, etc.) and buffalo.
The 0.25 ml straws are delivered to all our customers together with the necessary accessories needed by insemination: AI glove, AI pipette, recording note as well as liquid nitrogen for semen preservation.
The accessories and delivery cost are included in the straw’s price, liquid nitrogen is regularly delivered to all those who request this service for a fee.
Deliveries of semen are processed after firm order and are honored within up to seven business days, depending on the area and volume of MSC / liquid nitrogen requested; deliveries to county farmers' associations are carried out according to a schedule agreed with them.
